The Ogden Museum of Southern Art celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the opening of Stephen Goldring Hall on August 23, 2008 with a Summer Family Fair. The day featured hands-on arts and crafts (creating matchbox cars, animals, houses, musical instruments, paintings, and much more out of a variety of materials); live music from the Freddy Fred Show, The Retrospects, and the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music; along with food and drink. The festivities, however, started on Thurs. Aug. 21 at Ogden After Hours when Lionel Ferbos and the the Louisiana Shakers performed, and throughout the four days of celebrations (which ended on Aug. 24) the museum offered a number of special promotions. Ogden After Hours Every Thursday, 6-8 p.m. Take in the art while enjoying the music. A kids’ activity table is also on hand for busy moms and dads. Free to members; $10 for nonmembers. September 18 Rick Trolson and Gringo do Choro Brazilian jazz with a New Orleans flavor. September 25 G.G. Shinn - A sage of swamp pop. Presented in collaboration with the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation. October 2 19th Street Red - A blues musician who cites John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Burnett and Howlin’ Wolf as influences. October 9 Kim Carson and Lynn Drury - Carson, a Texas native, brings a honky-tonk country spirit to her music. October 16 Riccardo Crespo - South Brazilian musician, singer and songwriter who plays both acoustic guitar and harmonica, and his music contains elements of Bossa Nova, jazz, Latin and folk. October 23 Little Willie Littlefield - A rare performance by this rhythm and blues pianist from Texas, whose work in the ‘50s and ’60s influenced a number of musicians. Presented in collaboration with the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation. October 30 David Egan - A multi-talented songwriter who can seamlessly meld New Orleans groove, Cajun, jazz and blues. November 6 TBA November 13 Mary Gauthier - Singer-songwriter who crafts folk songs that poetically reflect life’s struggles—and whose “Mercy Now” was on a number of Top 10 lists in 2005. November 20 Michael Hurt and His Haunted Hearts Formed in 2003, this group performs rockabilly with a hillbilly point of view. Presented in collaboration with the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation. November 27 Closed for Thanksgiving December 4 Bill Summers - A percussionist whose jazz tinged music has led to collaborations with Quincy Jones. December 11 Creede Williams - Singer-songwriter whose compositions speak to all ages. Fall 2008/LOUISIANA CULTURAL VISTAS 35 SPECIAL EVENTS Art for Arts’ Sake: October 4 Welcome the fall season with the debut of three outstanding shows: Sally Mann: What Remains, Silver Bullets and Holy Water: Paintings by Margaret Evangeline, and Lisa Silvestri: New Orleans Portrait Project, The John McDonogh Series. Admission is free. O What a Night Gala: October 18 Wine will be flowing at this evening of art, music and good company! Architect Arthur Q. Davis will also be honored with the Opus Award, given to a member of the arts community whose work constitutes a major contribution to the cultural landscape. The silent and live auctions will feature works by major Southern artists, and the auctioneer will be Sotheby’s Jamie Niven. The Center for Southern Craft and Design offers the finest pottery, jewelry, textiles, glass, metal, wood and basketry from more than 40 outstanding Southern artists.
