www.leh.org Louisiana Cultural Vistas wins six Press Club awards, three for first place Louisiana Cultural Vistas’ graphic designer Toan Nguyen received two first-place awards at the July 19 New Orleans Press Club Awards ceremony — one for Editorial Illustration (for his drawings accompanying the “Chinatown” feature), and another in the Layout and Design category for the “Big Charity” feature. Both stories appeared in the Fall 2007 issue. Other LCV winners included: • Ben Sandmel, First Place for his critical review of the Fats Domino tribute CD (Fall 2007). • Richard Sexton, Second Place in the Photo Story category for “Terra Incognita” (Fall 2007). • Cheryl Gerber, Third Place in the Photo Story category for her photographs of imposing doors and private clubs accompanying “New Orleans: An Autopsy” (Winter 2007-2008). • Benjamin Toledano, Second Place in the Editorial category for “New Orleans: An Autopsy” (Winter 2007-2008). Our grants support both popular and classical humanities. Since 1971, the LEH has invested more than $43.5 million in cultural programming throughout the state. • More than 3,900 elementary, middle and high school teachers from across Louisiana have attended LEH Teacher Institutes for Advanced Study, bringing back to their collective classrooms of 500,000 students new perspectives on humanities subjects ranging from the Harlem Renaissance to Chinese culture and history. • Louisiana history, Southern folktales, Southeastern Native American culture, and literature of the American West are four of the subjects currently covered in the LEH-funded reading program for adults: Readings in Literature and Culture. RELIC has enrolled 87,000 readers in 62 parishes. • Louisiana Cultural Vistas quarterly magazine brings LEH grant projects to the printed page for 50,000 Louisianians. • Prime Time Family Reading Time, a unique LEH literacy program, brings at-risk families together with storytellers and scholars to improve literacy skills and to share new worlds through reading. • Call 1 (800) 909-7990. With almost 6,000 pages of Louisiana history, literature and art now in print, Louisiana Cultural Vistas reaches 50,000 people a year, including students through schools and libraries in every parish of the state.
