A 1793 copper-plate engraving, from a painting by J.L. Boquet, by J.B. Chapuy, engraver, depicts the St. Domingue port city of Cap Français ablaze in August of 1791. The series of slave rebellions and military actions eventually resulted in the formation of a new nation, Haiti, in 1804. courtesy of Dr. Fritz Daguillard 36 LOUISIANA ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES\Spring 2006
