Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Spring 2006 - (Page 8) LOUISIANA STATE MUSEUM DRUM Role Jazz drummers take center stage in a new exhibit W hy are so many great jazz drummers from New Orleans? In a city that loves a parade, and where parades are driven by the “second line” beat, drummers are the heart and soul of the city’s musical soundscape. As Louis Armstrong wrote about his childhood in New Orleans, “Now the marching bands in the North never went in for jazz always straight march time and all that. But in New Orleans it was different. All the brass bands would swing jazz like the orchestras even the drummer had a swing.” 8 LOUISIANA ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES\Spring 2006
