This, of course, was during the heyday of abstract expressionism. The exhibition was the fourth in a series, preceded by: “Young American Printmakers,” 1953; “Recent Drawings USA,” 1956; and “Recent Sculpture USA,” 1959. Only work executed after January 1, 1958 was eligible. More than 9,000 photographs and slides were submitted by 1,841 artists in 48 states. One hundred and fifty artists were asked to submit 335 works to the Museum in New York. The curators selected 74 paintings by 74 artists for the final exhibition, including Eugenie. After the opening in New York, the exhibition traveled to seven other venues around the country including the New Orleans Museum of Art (called the Delgado Museum of Art at that time). right: John Chaffe, 2001, graphite on Arches Palatine, 44 x 30 inches, [Private Collection] 14
