Robert Polidori: After the Flood Through April 10 This exhibit includes six large-scale prints of New Orleans that Polidori took for his book “After the Flood.” Photographs by Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor Through April 15 Two mavericks in the field of photography: Uelsmann utilizes traditional darkroom techniques, while Taylor uses a digital camera, then manipulates the images on her computer. Jose Torres Tama Through April 15 Series of expressionistic drawings of historically important free people of color who lived in the Treme and Faubourg Marigny neighborhoods of New Orleans in the 19th and 20th centuries. Paintings by Herbert Frère Through May 30 For the first time in 50 years, a limited number of paintings by New Orleanian Herbert Frère will be on exhibit. Elliott Erwitt April 19 to July 30 Photographs of the South taken during the 1960s. The exhibit will also feature photographs that have never been on exhibit. William Moreland: Southern Masters Series April 19 to July 30 Abstract paintings of nature by this artist who taught at University of Louisiana/Lafayette. Twelve Month Changing Special Exhibition in Collaboration with Ed McGowin Name Change Project • Throughout the Year Each month of the year, the Ogden is exhibiting works corresponding chronologically with Ed McGowinʼs Name Change and subsequent persona. The rotation of exhibitions started in Nov. 2007 with Alva Frost and will continue Name Change for a year. James Surls: Sculpture for New Orleans project For more than 30 years, James Surls has redefined – or in fact, created – his own dialogue between the natural world and his art. Totemic, mystical, primitive, Surlsʼ sculptures are a ruggedly elegant melding of originality and invention. His sculpture installed in the plaza of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, “Me, Knife, Diamond and Flower,” created in 2000, is cast bronze and stainless-steel; its dimensions are 26ʼ x 16ʼ x 8ʼ. The piece is part of the Sculpture for New Orleans project, organized by Texas artist Michael Manjarris. A Centennial Celebration of Lionel Hampton April 19 to July 30 More than 30 photographs and other personal items on loan from the University of Idaho that were owned by jazz great Lionel Hampton will be on exhibit to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hamptonʼs birth, April 20, 1908. This will coincide with the publishing of a book Flying Home Lionel Hampton: Celebrating 100 Years of Good Vibes, by Stanley Crouch, foreword by Wynton Marsalis; published by State Street Press. opposite page, top: A tribute to Lionel Hampton will take place April 19-20. opposite page, bottom: The Seven Last Plaques, by Roger Brown SPECIAL EVENTS A Weekend of Lionel Hampton April 19 & 20 On April 19, The Lionel Hampton Orchestra comes to the Ogden to perform at Hamptonʼs official centennial birthday “party” and the opening of the Lionel Hampton exhibit at the Ogden.
