Experience I had gained in New York were useful here and I found niche markets for custom picture framing, gold leaf frame restoration, and then went on putting my Rolliflex 2¼ to work making well considered black and white photo portraits influenced by New York photographers like Arnold Newman. I was the first artist/photographer here to exercise this candid approach. I developed a fairly good business but my real skills as draughtsman and painter had the stronger calling. I divide my work as “commissioned work” — developed for a specific client or purpose, this in order to earn my living — and “studio work,”a more private and intimate activity. I approach my work empirically, with little pre-planning, and quite often surprise myself with the result. I am now working on a monograph about my career which is financed by a grant from The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and generous private donations.
