A reporter for an English-language newspaper, the American, declared with a bit of hyperbole and no lack of enthusiasm: “A number of those participating … are nationally and even internationally known.” The Arts and Crafts Club recognized, in 1944, that the time had arrived for a retrospective show. Mounted in two parts, the exhibition opened with a survey of pictures and ceramics dated between 1923 and 1933. Josephine’s Crepe Myrtles was on view The second half of the retrospective followed, with examples from 1933 through 1943. Once again Rue Kerlerec hung at the Arts and Crafts Club. Louise C. Hoffman, author of Josephine Crawford: An Artist’s Vision, is a native North Carolinian and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Formerly an editor at The Historic New Orleans Collection, she is now a freelance writer living in New Orleans.
