Smith, 1987; Michael P. Smith, In the Spirit © The Historic New Orleans Collection showcases nearly 200 images exploring different aspects of Smith’s 35-year career. THNOC’s display, Beyond the Music, takes viewers on a journey into the world of second lines, jazz funerals, brass bands, Mardi Gras Indians, and social aid and pleasure clubs and features Smith’s groundbreaking photographs of spiritual churches. The CAC’s display, Twenty-Five Jazz Fests, provides a brief glimpse of some of the legendary acts that graced Jazz Fest’s stages between 1970 and 2004. A full-color catalogue chronicles Smith’s career and his extensive archive, which is now housed at The Collection’s Williams Research Center (410 Chartres Street).
