ON EXHIBIT Through April 15, 2009 Ogden Past, Present and Future: Selections from the Permanent Collection and New Acquisitions The Ogden Museum of Southern Art is showcasing an outstanding selection from its permanent collection (with some pieces being staff and docents’ favorites) as well as sharing its most recent acquisitions. From the permanent collection, featured artists include Douglas Bourgeois, Jacqueline Bishop, Alexander Stolin, Kendall Shaw, Clyde Broadway, and others. Its most recent acquisitions include pieces by David Bates, Shawn Hall, Clementine Hunter, Hunt Slonem, Tom Nakashima, Errol Barron, Claudia DeMonte, Fritz Bultman, Jacqueline Humphries, Linda Benglis, Michael Meads and others. Jack Stewart: From Atlanta to New York - A Life Survey This exhibition takes a look at the career of this multi-talented artist. After growing up in Atlanta, Jack Stewart left home to attend Yale University, where he studied with Josef Albers and Willem de Kooning among others. Upon moving to New York, he became one of the leaders in the abstract movement and was known for his murals. Stewart was a photographer as well, and a book of his photographs on graffiti in New York City, “Graffiti Kings: New York City Mass Transit Art of the 1970s,” will be published by Abrams Press in April 2009. He was also instrumental in founding New York Artists Equity, a support group for artists’ rights. The World in Color: Photographs by Jorge Otero A master of color photography, Jorge Otero printed his own C-type color prints in an era dominated by machine printing and digital images. A native of Cuba, he immigrated to the United States as a teenager and embraced American culture, while honoring his Cuban past. This exhibition features Otero’s landscape photographs, including those of the Amazon River, and a one-year study of the architecture of Charleston, S.C., photographed at night. His last photo series included photographs of a defunct sugar mill in Louisiana shot with a 4 x 5 view camera. Otero’s last years were spent in New Orleans, where he passed away in 2003. Selections from the Collection of Donna and William Hines Paintings from the late 19th to mid-20th centuries, featuring Alexander John Drysdale, Knute Heldner, William Woodward, George Henry Clements, and others. Nene Humphrey: Selections from the Andrews-Humphrey Collection/ Ogden Museum of Southern Art Paintings, sculptures, mixed media, and prints by acclaimed artist Nene Humphrey. She is the wife of the late Benny Andrews, whose work, along with that of his father, George Andrews, are also part of the Andrews-Humphrey Collection. Through April 30, 2009 North Carolina Living Treasures 2009: Ceramics by Norm Schulman and Cynthia Bingle Art melds with function in these pieces created by master potters Norm Schulman and Cynthia Bringle. Through June 3, 2009 Randy Shull: Crossing Boundaries This North Carolina artist pushes the limits of functional work and design in American craft. This 20-year retrospective will showcase furniture, mixed media and paintings.
