Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Spring 2009 - (Page 8) A Photo Essay by KEVIN LEVINE Captain Kevin Levine is a member of the Associated Branch Pilots for the Port of New Orleans. River pilots serve an important safety function since oceangoing vessels with foreign crews are usually not familiar with the currents and hazards of every port that they visit. The Associated Branch Pilots are sometimes called the “bar pilots” for their task of guiding ships “over the bar” — the shallow section of the river from its mouth to the Gulf of Mexico. “I spent my childhood summers swimming, fishing and exploring the beaches and muddy silt deposits from the Mississippi River at South Pass,” says Levine. “As the son of a bar pilot, I followed my father’s path. I have worked on the water since the age of 17. I have a deep respect for the river and the oceans.” “I’m attracted to the art of photography by manipulating contrast, color saturation, brightness, and special effects. I use a wide-angle lens to portray the endless horizon and immense size of the vessels, some of which have lengths up to 900 feet. All of the photographs in this essay were created on the Mississippi River.” Kevin Levine is represented by Jonathan Ferrara gallery in New Orleans: (504) 522-5471; www.jonathanferraragallery.com.
