Weeks Mary Leach Werner LETTERS Michael Sartisky’s Editor’s Column in the Fall 2005 issue concerning the rebuilding of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina brought about a number of responses: I just opened Louisiana Cultural Vistas to your column, “The New Orleans of Possibilities,” and it delighted me. I am in awe of the way you have kept the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities going and produced one of your most important issues, to be followed I imagine by another issue that makes the case more fully for the arts as a major component of the restoration effort — art can power the resurrection effort. Too little is said of its role. Didn’t Lincoln turn to the theater to refresh his spirit? Trouble breeds achievements. That's a comfort. —Prof. David Madden, LSU, Baton Rouge Your article is beautiful. Thank you for writing it. I have always been proud of being from New Orleans. Your words, your ability to say and to see and “to be” New Orleans as you wrote it inspires me, and I suspect has inspired many. Yes! to New Orleans living. The city is a mistress to many. The love of many lives. —Tracey Johnson, Jewelry Designer I like that essay! I hope that New Orleans can come back, although I keep hearing that many, many home owners do not plan to return, and I sometimes wonder if recreating the semi-segregation and poverty that were the seedbed for so much of the musical (if not other) culture of New Orleans can be done or should be. Can a society that is better off also be rich in culture springing from I A photo- the bottom up? That having all of God’s children (the Noah’s Ark nature of New Orleans’s population) in one place has been fruitful seems clear and perhaps that seedbed CAN be recreated with the right policies on housing and an economy that offers opportunities. In sum, we humanists need to know more about how culture happens so that the planners will not, as you so eloquently say, remake our crown jewel into some other place, without its soul. —Paul E. Hoffman, Murill Professor of History, LSU I just had to jot a note to you in appreciation for your piece about New Orleans. Thank you for getting it right, Michael! I’m a fifth generation New Orleanian, and have always known we are an exotic and endangered species, a reality I felt most acutely during the several years when I lived out of state. Let us all hope that we will get assistance at this critical time, and perhaps more importantly, let us all help each other in the greater cause to rebirth this truly wonderful city. —Ellen Harris, photographer I couldn’t have said it better. Take that George Will! (He suggested in Newsweek that rebuilding a city below sea level wasn’t worth it.) I will forward this to my many friends and associates everywhere! —B. Bordelon Your column brought joy to my heart and tears to my eyes. Thank you for defining our precious culture. I intend to be here forever and watch the phoenix come alive once again. —Elizabeth L. Hughes, Corporate Realty, Inc., Union Passenger Terminal, New Orleans CORRECTIONS I Photo captions for the feature story “Tabasco: Edmund McIlhenny and the Birth of a Louisiana Pepper Sauce” that appeared in the Fall 2005 issue contained a number of errors. On page 27, the Tabasco ad shown is an early 20th-century ad, not a 19th-century ad. On page 31, in reference to the topographical map, Avery Island isn’t off the coast, but about three miles inland in Iberia Parish, not St. Martin Parish. Also on page 31, the former pigeonniere was called “The Laboratory,” not “Marsh House.” On page 32, the workers aren’t sealing crocks, but mashing peppers. graph on page 87 of the Summer 2005 issue of St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans was inadvertantly flopped and incorrectly credited. The photographer is Robert R. Brantley and the photo appears here in its correct orientation. Louisiana Cultural Vistas regrets the errors.
