Since 1971, the LEH has provided over $9 million for more than 1,700 projects. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers from across Louisiana have attended LEH Summer Teacher Institutes, bringing back to their 250,000 students new perspectives on humanities subjects ranging from the Harlem Renaissance to Chinese culture and history. Louisiana history, Southern folktales, Southeastern Native American culture, and literature of the American West are four of the subjects currently covered in the LEH-funded reading program for adults: Readings in Literature and Culture. RELIC has enrolled 48,000 readers in 61 parishes. Louisiana Cultural Vistas quarterly magazine brings LEH grant projects to the printed page for 80,000 Louisianians. PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME, a unique LEH literacy program, brings at-risk families together with storytellers and scholars to improve literacy skills and to share new worlds through reading. Nationally renowned folklorist and producer of the internationally acclaimed American Routes syndicated radio program Nick Spitzer has been named the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ 2006 Humanist of the Year. The LEH announced the Humanist of the Year and other state humanities award winners recently and will present them during special ceremonies March 18 at Houmas House Plantation in Darrow, just south of Baton Rouge. The LEH’s annual humanities awards ceremony, sponsored by Hibernia National Bank, honors Louisianians who have made outstanding contributions to the study and understanding of the humanities. Nick Spitzer This year’s event is part of American Routes of the LEH’s 35th anniversary. During the program, the LEH will release a 35-year report summarizing the organization’s investment and impact in Louisiana. Established in 1971, the LEH is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. “The LEH has invested $38.5 million in humanities programs and projects that have reached people and community organizations in every parish in the state,” said LEH president and executive director Michael Sartisky. “An audience of more than 70 million people LEH Annual has benefited from all LEH-supported Awards Banquet programs.” Other awards to be presented during the March 18 ceremonies at Houmas Saturday, March 18 House include Lifetime Contribution to the Humanities, the LEH Chair’s Award for Institutional Support, Humanities Houmas House Book of the Year Award, Special Plantation Humanities Awards and the Humanities Darrow, LA Teacher of the Year Award.
