Birds of a Feather: Wildfowl Carving in Southeast Louisiana Part I: Early Working Decoys, through January 7, 2008 Part II: Contemporary Carvings, January 15–April 20, 2008 Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Admission: $6 for adults; members, children, and students are free Birds of a Feather, a two-part exhibition, explores the craftsmanship of hand-carved wildfowl decoys from southeast Louisiana. Part I, Early Working Decoys, centers on decoys created for use in the field. Part II, Contemporary Carvings, traces the evolution of the carving tradition as a decorative and competitive art form. The exhibition will include numerous examples of species commonly found in southeast Louisiana, such as mallards, teal, and coots (poules d’eau). Nicole Vidacovich, three generations of the Vizier family, Jim Mossmeier, and Tan, Jett, and Jude Brunet are among the featured artists. Classic! A Celebration of Sugar Bowl Memories Through January 13, 2008 Williams Gallery, 533 Royal Street Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. The Historic New Orleans Collection, the new home of the Sugar Bowl archives, is geared up for an exhibition of seven decades of Sugar Bowl memorabilia. Classic! A Celebration of Sugar Bowl Memories captures more than seven decades of the Sugar Bowl experience, from the inaugural 1935 game at Tulane Stadium to the much-anticipated 2007–08 Bowl Championship Series. Through photographs, programs, scrapbook pages and interviews with coaches and players, the exhibition explores classic moments in Sugar Bowl history. Patrons have the rare opportunity to view the original Sugar Bowl trophy and a film made exclusively for this exhibition. Louisiana: Where Land Meets Water Presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and the New Orleans Museum of Art Through March 2, 2008 The New Orleans Museum of Art, 1 Collins C. Diboll Circle, City Park Wednesday–Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Free to Louisiana residents; standard admission applies for all other patrons. From across the state artists have responded to the land, exploring different techniques and stylistic trends in their quest to capture the essence of the Louisiana landscape and its waterways. This exhibition traces the evolution of the landscape genre over 175 years in Louisiana and the individuals associated with it through a showcase of paintings, watercolors, prints, books, and drawings by more than 50 artists from the collections of both THNOC and NOMA. Art from the Seebold Salon: Women’s Guild of the New Orleans Opera Association Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Seebold family was active in the art world of New Orleans. In addition to being avid art collectors and supporters, some family members were artists themselves. The Historic New Orleans Collection, in collaboration with the Women’s Guild of the New Orleans Opera Association, presents an exhibition of landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes, miniatures, and portraits from the Seebold family collection. Set in a North American forest near French and Spanish settlements, the music for the act was inspired by the dances and music performed by a delegation of Indians from the Mississippi Valley during their 1725 visit with Louis XV.
