Louisiana Cultural Vistas - Winter 2007 - (Page 6) Editorial cartoons on view at the LSU Museum of Art An exhibit at the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, and its accompanying catalog, both titled “The Line That Roars: Editorial Cartoons in the Age of Anxiety,” was underwritten by a $15,600 LEH grant. The exhibit, on view through February 10, 2008, covers the work of three prize-winning contemporary editorial cartoonists: David Norwood of The Advocate (Baton Rouge), Steve Kelley of the New Orleans TimesPicayune and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner David Horsey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The exhibition illuminates editorial cartoons' power of humor, satire and parody to convey a wide range of messages. “The Line that Roars” consists of approximately 200 original artworks created during the past ten years (from about 1997 to 2007). For more information on the LSU Museum of Art, call (225) 389-7200, or log on to: www.lsumoa.com. John Scott Collection at the Louisiana Humanities Center opens for public viewing The LEH opened its remarkable John T. Scott art collection to the public on Sept. 20 at a special reception for Scott's family. John Scott was one of those rare artistic spirits who let the “sidewalks of New Orleans” speak to his soul and imagination. Through his singular art, he created a visual and artistic legacy that will inspire generations to come. The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities has embarked on its mission to make the LEH Humanities Center a focal point for Scott's art, for no other artist has captured the cultural spirit and complexities of New Orleans and its people as eloquently. On September 1, 2007, Scott — known for his African-Caribbean-New Orleans inspired kinetic sculpture — died in Houston after two double lung transplants and his long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was 67. In 1992, Scott received the prestigious “Genius Grant” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for his creativity as one of the nation’s most innovate artists. In 2005, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) recognized his contribution to American art in a major retrospective, “Circle Dance: The Art of John T. Scott”. A month after the show closed, Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, forcing Scott and hundreds of thousands to flee to Houston and other cities around the nation. Throughout his long career as an artist, Scott drew upon the city’s rich AfricanCaribbean culture and musical heritage in creating his vibrant kinetic sculptures that often explored themes such as the “diddley bow” from West African mythology or rhythms and movements inspired by early 19th-century African slave dances in the city’s famed Congo Square. Select works from the Scott Collection at the LEH can be viewed on line at www.leh.org, or by arranging a visit to the Louisiana Humanities Center at Turners’ Hall by calling (504) 523-4352.
