Prime Time Family Reading Time receives major national expansion grant The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded the LEH's nationally acclaimed Prime Time Family Reading Time program a $275,212 grant to support 18 bilingual programs in five other states. NEH reviewers praised the depth of humanities content delivered by Prime Time programs. Reviewers stated: “The program not only involves families in reading together — a critical step in breaking the cycle of illiteracy — but also engages them in reflection and discussion of important humanities themes and questions.” The review panel said the reading programs offer “a good model for building future public appreciation for the humanities” among “a very hard-to-reach audience.” Parents and children bond over Guidelines and applications are available at www.leh.org and the ALA Public reading at Prime Time programs. Since Prime Time’s inception as the family literacy program of the LEH in 1991, the LEH has initiated 425 programs in Louisiana and 331 outside the state. Prime Time Family Reading Time is a 6 or 8 week reading, discussion, and storytelling program for parents and their children held at public libraries. A university scholar (who functions as a discussion leader) and storyteller conduct weekly book discussion and storytelling sessions based on award-winning children’s books.
