(The binding of the softback edition of A Joyful Noise in this writer’s library came unglued: shoddy workmanship.) The book takes its title from scripture, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord”–Psalm 98. The book carries a dedication at once simple and profound: “To the New Orleans Second Line.” The roaming eye of a photographic artist in his prime finds a radiant trio in the Dixie Cups, the women who had hits with “Iko Iko” and “Going to the Chapel” We see James Booker with his legendary eye patch, emblazoned with a star, seated at a piano at Jazz Fest with a TV cameraman, faceless behind his instrument, bearing down on the brilliant, madcap Piano Prince. The book includes an image so marvelously rare of Henry R. Byrd (Professor Longhair) and his wife, with four colleagues, hands aloft in a prayer before a meeting of the Special Forces Civil Defense group. The idea of black folk in a poor neighborhood wearing uniforms affiliated with the United States government Civil Defense units is a surpassing irony; a companion image of Byrd and his wife posing in uniform, looking like members of a National Guard unit, registers how well Smith knew the people whose images he took. And how well they trusted him. More than learning a lesson from the Spiritual Church experiences, Mike Smith befriended the people whose music and rituals he followed. He cared about them in an elemental way.
