Carvers mimicked a range of activities and habits in order to give a rig of decoys a more natural flock-like appearance. Among the typical poses are sippers (with the head thrown back slightly to replicate a duck’s swallowing motion); preeners (with the bird’s head turned to the rear and the bill grooming the feathers); swimmers (with the head and tail turned slightly to one side); and minnow chasers (with the neck extended and the bill low to the water, as if in pursuit of small fish). Birds were also presented “at rest” in different ways. One of the most popular positions shows the neck retracted, with the head seemingly attached to the body. Another at rest variation is the tucked position, which resembles preening but presents the neck flatter on the back and the bill more deeply buried in the feathers. Perhaps most unusual of all is the tip-up, a half-decoy that simulated the appearance of a duck feeding underwater. Only the back half of the body and the tail are visible in this pose. Another type of decoy, a confidence decoy, represented non-hunted species, thereby enhancing the “natural” feel of the setting. Wading birds such as herons and egrets were often chosen as confidence decoys.
