LEH website features enhanced digital components In recent months, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities has added enhanced digital features to its homepage, www.leh.org, as part of the Digital Humanities Initiative underwritten by the National Endowment for the Humanities. On-line viewers can access: • A 360-degree virtual tour of the Louisiana Humanities Center. • A page-turning, digital reproduction of Louisiana Cultural Vistas with embedded weblinks to sites. • A mockup of the first phases of KnowLA, the LEH’s emerging digital encyclopedia of Louisiana history and culture. • A video of a panel/presentation of the history of the Creole Wild West (one of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian tribes), filmed during an event that took place at the LEH’s Humanities Center. • An innovative artistic video by Lafayette artist Francis Pavy, designer the commemorative LEH lapel pin. • Two rebroadcasts of interviews with LEH Executive Director and President Michael Sartisky that appeared on New Orleans public television station WLAE. On a quarterly basis, Dr. Sartisky will talk about recent LEH programs and forthcoming issues of Louisiana Cultural Vistas. Louisiana’s coffee history brewed up at Imperial Calcasieu Museum With aid from an LEH grant, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum in Lake Charles recently launched a new multimedia exhibition entitled Java: Louisiana's Coffee Roasters which chronicles the rich story of Louisiana’s coffee industry. Coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the Community Coffee Company, the exhibition includes oral histories from industry pioneers and historians, folk crafts inspired by coffee, a collection of early memorabilia, and examples of period roasting equipment and bean types. Token of Identity - State I, 1981, by Ida Kohlmeyer Ida Kohlmeyer’s works on exhibit in Baton Rouge Ida Kohlmeyer (1912-1997) was one of New Orleans’ most renowned modern art pioneers and arguably the region’s best known female artist at the time of her death at age 84. The Louisiana Art and Science Museum in Baton Rouge will host a retrospective of her work through January 11, 2009 titled Ida Kohlmeyer: Standing Among Giants. This exhibition, along with accompanying interpretive materials and educational programming funded by an LEH grant, seeks to place Kohlmeyer into the context of other American masters. Balancing the roles of wife, mother, and professional artist, Kohlmeyer did not begin her artistic career until she was middle-aged, yet she quickly earned national acclaim at a time when male artists dominated the art world. This exhibition of painting and sculpture demonstrates the influence of leading modern artists, including Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, and Joan Miró, on the development of Kohlmeyer's distinctive style. Organic and geometric forms, dazzlingly bright colors, and a personal vocabulary of signs and symbols characterize her work. Oil City hosts final traveling Smithsonian exhibition of New Harmonies A major traveling Smithsonian Institution exhibition on the roots of American music will be on display from December 11, 2008 – January 15, 2009, at the Louisiana State Oil and Gas Museum in Oil City. This marks the last stop in the LEH-sponsored traveling display that has drawn enthusiastic audiences in five cities since April 2008. New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music tells America’s story through the diverse musical genres that evolved from our nation’s unique blending of cultures and experiences. Through panel displays and interactive kiosks, the exhibition includes material on sacred songs, blues, country, rock’n’roll and more. Oil City will mount a local exhibition and present public humanities programs that showcase Louisiana’s rich and diverse musical heritage.
