Hermann, a wealthy commodities broker, bought the property on St. Louis Street from a free woman of color named Julie Boise and had the house built in 1831. Judge Felix Grima purchased the property in 1844. The Exchange combined the names of the two families that occupied the house, renaming it the Hermann-Grima Historic House and opening it to the public as a museum in 1971. The Exchange officially shifted its focus to historic preservation and interpretation. The Exchange has exerted great effort to Volunteer interpreters prepare period meals in the 1830s-era kitchen of the Hermann-Grima house. New Orleans architect James Gallier, Jr. to be his own private residence in the mid1800s. It was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1974 and was opened to the public as an historic house museum by the Ella West Freeman Foundation. It operated under the auspices of the Foundation until 1986, when ownership and operation was transferred to Tulane University. Using the two houses as a parts of the house have been refurbished with period collections either purchased by the Exchange or donated by descendants of families that occupied the house. provide area schools with an opportunity to step back in time by visiting the HermannGrima House and seeing what life was like in the 19th century. Continuing to expand on its mission of interpreting 19th-century New Orleans, the Exchange also obtained the historic Gallier House on Royal Street in 2006 from Tulane University. Gallier House was designed by backdrop, the Woman’s Exchange is able to give an accurate and fascinating account of New Orleans from the early 1830s through the end of the 19th century. Both properties are accredited by the American Association of Museums. The future of the organization is strong as the legacy of these forward-thinking women continues into the 21st century. The museums are closed on major holidays. Admission to one museum is $10 for adults and $8 for AAA members, students over 18, and children 8-18 years old. Combination tickets for both museums are $18 for adults, and $15 for other categories.
