www.leh.org RELIC: Liz rules Lincoln Parish “Elizabeth I of England and Her Times,” the newest reading and discussion program in the RELIC firmament, continues to rock the Louisiana humanities world with record-breaking audience attendance. The Lincoln Parish Library began its program on August 19 — traditionally a deadly time to attract an audience —and filled its cavernous conference room. “We had a wonderful beginning program tonight! We had 61 in attendance. I think we will have a good showing for the rest of this RELIC Series,” predicted Louisiana Tech's Dr. Jeffery Hankins, one of the scholars leading the program. The program, now in its first full year, has struck a very responsive chord with Louisiana’s reading public. Held earlier in Shreveport, it drew over 90 people. One attendee stated: “The program offers access to subjects with instructors who have a true passion for the material.” Even in Terrebonne Parish the traditionally Anglophobic Acadians embraced the English-speaking ruler as one of their own. “I loved it. I wish that it could continue for a longer period of time,” lamented one Houma resident. Ask your library to offer the Queen lodging in your community. Tennessee Williams Festival prepares for 2009 event The 23rd annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, a longstanding LEH-funded event, will take place March 25-29. The Festival is an annual five-day celebration held in late March, which showcases national and regional scholars, writers, and performing artists. Programs include panel discussions, theatrical performances, a one-act play competition, lectures, literary walking tours, musical performances, a bookfair, and more. Among the highlights scheduled for 2009: • Staged readings by Tony Award-winning actresses Marian Seldes, Frances Sternhagen, and Zoe Caldwell. • Conversations with Pulitzer Prize-winner Richard Ford and author Jill Connor Browne of the best-selling book Sweet Potato Queens. • Master classes led by Pulitzer-winning journalist Rick Bragg, Pulitzer-nominated playwright John Biguenet, author John Berendt of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, bestselling novelist Nevada Bar, and poet Mark Doty. • The return of the ever popular theatrical production “Ignatius On Stage” and the smash hit actors’ competition, “Tennessee’s Got Talent!” • Tennessee Williams’ Kingdom of Earth staged by New Orleans theater group Cripple Creek. • A poetry slam hosted by world-class performance poet Chuck Perkins. • Panel discussions on topics ranging from a retrospective on Flannery O’Connor to Southern Gothic literature and books inspired by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. PRIME TIME reaches across Louisiana in Fall 2008 programming Drawing from state funds as well as numerous private foundation grants, PRIME TIME implemented 23 programs across 17 Louisiana parishes this fall. “We are particularly pleased to be able to serve Catahoula and Tensas parishes for the first time this fall,” said Faye Flanagan, PRIME TIME Project Director. By the end of 2008, PRIME TIME will have implemented 466 programs across 63 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes. Out of the 23 scheduled programs, PRIME TIME worked closely with a few special programs, including two pilot programs scheduled at Sixth Grade Academy in Shreveport and Benjamin Banneker Elementary School in New Orleans. Both pilot programs targeted middle school children and their families using the chapter book Seedfolks by Paul Fleishman. The third special project will be the second installation of PRIME TIME at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, where families from nearby schools are invited to attend PRIME TIME hosted in the museum’s galleries. The last two weeks of this program engaged the families in an arts and crafts project designed around literature.
