www.ogdenmuseum.org Past, present and future As it celebrates an anniversary, the Ogden has become an integral part of New Orleans This past August 2008, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art celebrated its fifth anniversary in Stephen Goldring Hall. Since the doors opened, the Ogden has become an integral part of the New Orleans community, as well as the region. As the home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of Southern art in the world, the Ogden showcases the richness and diversity of Southern culture — art, music, literature and food — and how it relates to the South and the world at large. The foundation of the Museum’s permanent collection was donated in 1994 by New Orleans businessman and philanthropist Roger Ogden. Since then, the museum’s collection has grown to more than 4,000 works, through donations from across the United States. The Museum’s holdings now include Southern artworks from Washington, D.C. and 15 Southern states spanning the 18th to 21st centuries, and encompass study and archival pieces, paintings, prints, watercolors, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, crafts and Mother Louisiana, by Dominico Canova, circa 1850 design. The art is presented in way that reflects the spirit of the South — the celebration of place — despite the challenges of melding cultures. But this mélange of races, religions and ethnicities all merged into a distinct voice. For example, works by professionally trained artists are displayed in galleries adjacent to those who are self-taught, thereby creating a link and asking for further exploration of what it means to be a Southerner or to be in the South. Artists in the permanent collection — and some of whom will have pieces in the anniversary show Ogden Past, Present and Future — include: Walter Anderson, Benny Andrews, Ernest James Bellocq, Dusti Bongé, Douglas Bourgeois, Clyde Broadway, Fritz Bultman, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Christenberry, Christopher Clark, Clyde Connell, Jeffrey Cook, Bennie Day, Alexander John Drysdale, Walker Evans, Roy Ferdinand, Knute Heldner, Robyn Horn, Marie Atchinson Hull, Clementine Hunter, Ida Kohlmeyer, Clarence John Laughlin, John McCrady, Elemore Morgan Jr., Julian Onderdonk, Noel Rockmore, Lulu King Saxon, John T. Scott, Kendall Shaw, Herbert Singleton, Jack Spencer, Will Henry Stevens, Helen Turner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wilt, Theodore Fonville Winans, Marion Post Wolcott, Ellsworth Woodward and William Woodward. One of the many exciting elements about the Ogden is that it continues to add to the core of its collection by acquiring art — not just contemporary pieces, but also those from earlier decades. Artists whose works have been acquired by the museum include those by David Bates, Ron Bechet Jr., Wendy Chisholm, Claudia DeMonte, George Dureau, Lin Emery, Robert Gordy, Jacqueline Humphries, Clementine Hunter, Wolf Kahn, Ida Kohlmeyer, Louviere + Vanessa, Elemore Morgan Sr. and Jr., William Solitario and Jesselyn Benson Zurik, to name just a few.
