He slowly walked about in this position among the papers. Sometimes he patted a paper gently with one hand, and purred like a cat. At that moment a librarian came in and told us that we would have to leave, because the room was not quite ready for browsing. LEHIGH IS NO STRANGER TO PRIDE I have an incredible story: A strong Lehigh network is an understatement. I graduated this past May from Lehigh University and was having dinner in Center City Philadelphia, where my girlfriend and I both live. We had two friends come visit us from the class of ’07 and the class of ’06. One is living and working in Boston and the other was on a short leave from the armed forces in Iraq. While at dinner, we were enjoying ourselves and catching up on fun-filled memories at Lehigh. Having recently graduated, there was tons to talk about and reflect upon. When it was time for the check, we asked our waiter and he replied, “Someone sitting inside saw your Lehigh shirt and took care of the bill for you.” “What?” we all replied. “Why would someone do that for us?” It turns out I was wearing a Lehigh University T-shirt and that speaks millions to some folks without a word exchanged. My girlfriend and I don’t go out to dinner very much because of a recent budget and I have never had anything like that happen to me in my life. This person remains a stranger to us all. What we know is that he is a male in his late 50s and a true Lehigh alum. This is not the only encounter I have had in the city with Lehigh alumni. The network is stronger than I ever believed. If only he stopped to say hi and tell us that he was once an Engineer/Mountain Hawk, he would have found out that he was buying dinner for not one but four Lehigh alums. Remember to wear your Lehigh shirts proudly everywhere you go because you never know who you might meet or what you might be getting. Claude Bruer Kershner IV ’07 We want to hear from you. ABOUT THE BROWSING ROOM Editor’s Note: As we were researching the special section on Linderman Library that appears in this issue, we came across the following item from the June 1930 Lehigh Alumni Bulletin regarding the last major renovation. We reprint it here as it appeared more than 70 years ago. Enjoy. Irrepressible! These undergraduates, we mean—bless them for postponing the growth of moss on our aging backs. They’ll “kid” anybody about anything, and make him like it. For instance, here’s part of “W. P.’s” account in the Brown and White, of his first visit to the Browsing Room in the new library. It should be explained that the room has not yet been stocked with books and is, therefore, not in actual use. Once in the room, which was empty of both students and books, I was momentarily at a loss as to how I should proceed to browse. At last I decided, “Students can do whatever they like in this room, so I guess there’s no set form here for browsing.” Seeing several newspapers on tables and chairs, I spread them on the floor and crept over them on my hands and knees. Every once in a while, as the mood struck me, I sniffed at the papers and barked sharply. While I was in the midst of a bark another student came in. I thought that I saw a gleam of contempt in his eyes. “Say, what do you think you’re doing?” he asked sardonically. “I’m browsing,” I answered with dignity. “Well, that’s not what I call browsing. Get up and I’ll show you the right way.” He placed his hands on the floor, and raised his PHOTO COURTESY OF LEHIGH UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES fall 2007 3 http://www.lehigh.edu/alumni
