Gast; Smith; Cheryl Kaplun, president of the Association of Student Alumni (ASA); and Matt Montgomery, president of the Class of 2008. In accordance with the theme of linking Lehigh classes from 50 years apart, Marshall pointed out the signiﬁcance of the number 50. “In 50 seconds, I’ll be done speaking. In 50 minutes, you’ll be back up on ‘the Hill.’ In 50 hours, you’ll be into your ﬁrst week of class as a college student. In 50 days, you’ll be taking midterm exams. In 50 weeks, you’ll have completed your ﬁrst year at Lehigh. In about 50 months, you’ll be graduating from Lehigh. “In 50 years, some of you will be here adopting the Class of 2061.” Chances are that Meagan McDonald ’11 will be one of those returning ﬁve decades from now—her dink hat atop her head.—Bill Doherty FUN FACTS ABOUT THE FIRST YEARS Lehigh’s Class of 2011 is an impressive group—no matter what measurement is used. Need proof? Here are some key stats, facts, and ﬁgures about Lehigh’s newest 1,165 students. Meagan McDonald ’11 (center) is surrounded by her mom, Susan McDonald ’80 (left); grandfather Dixon Early ’63 (back center) and Amy Early ’93 (right). When Paul Smith ’61 and Joe King ’61 attended their ﬁrst classes in 1957, Elvis Presley was “The King,” Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the Oval Ofﬁce, and postage stamps cost three cents. Much has changed over the years. One constant is Lehigh’s annual First-Year Student/Alumni Rally. The event includes a parade of ﬂag-bearing alumni representing every class starting from 1938. This year’s rally was held Aug. 25 on the UC Lawn. King and Smith, the class president of the Class of ’61, represented their class as it “adopted” the Class of 2011. Smith and King presented Meagan McDonald ’11, the representative for the Class of 2011, 4 lehigh alumni bulletin with her class’s ﬂag and with a Lehigh dink, a bucket-style hat that all 1961ers sported. “The Class of ’61 is here for you, Class of 2011,” Smith told McDonald, whose greatgrandfather, grandfather, aunt, great-uncle, and mom had all attended Lehigh. “We’ll be your mentors, we’ll be your friends, we’ll be your advisers.” During his talk, Smith recalled words uttered at his freshman rally by then-athletic director Percy Sadler: “Work hard. Be involved. Enjoy your friends at Lehigh, make lifelong connections. And beat the hell out of Lafayette.” Sadler’s words drew roars from the ﬁrst-year students.
