m m c c top: A student enters the library to Linderman Renewed My Linderman BARBARA TRAISTER, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH As a young faculty member, I used Linderman as my laboratory; it was the locus of all the journal articles and monographs that I needed for my research. My children were brought up on the circular staircases (which they loved and where I was always sure they would break their necks). Some years I held small classes in Linderman’s seminar rooms, which were later closed and now restored and increased in number. I used to give my students assignments in ferreting out particular information from the stacks in an effort to teach them to use the library well. I have seen the role of Linderman change over the years. The advent of the Internet and all the information it provides (both good and bad) has meant that Linderman is no longer the main go-to place for undergraduates. They may go there to search out a particular book or article, but only after they have learned of its existence on the Web. Instead, it has become a place to study, to work on group projects, and occasionally, to take a trip into the stacks. In terms of the renovations, I believe the biggest gain besides the comfort of readers has been in the preservation of the books themselves. the hard work and dedication of many, including the Library and Technology Services, facilities, and development teams,” Gast said. “We are also thankful for the dedication and leadership of Jean Farrington and Trustee Bradley Scheler ’74, ’05P, ’08P. We are greatly indebted to them and to all the members of the Linderman Project Advisory Committee for their tireless efforts on this project.” Before a recent board of trustees meeting, Scheler arrived on campus early and spent time in the reading room getting some work done. “It is a wonderful place to come home to,” Scheler says. “When I think back on all the hours I spent in Linderman, even with its drafts, dim lighting and inefﬁciency, I remember it as a warm and accommodating place. For so many of us, Linderman is, and always has been, at the heart and soul of our Lehigh experiences and memories. “Linderman is and will always be a part of us. We carry Linderman and all it stands for with us whatever we do and wherever we go. All these years later, when I have a challenging problem that I want to think my way through, in my mind’s eye I ﬁnd my way back to Linderman and take it on.
