The word spread among the new freshmen, and within a few weeks we gained more band members as the new students learned they could avoid compulsory Phys. Ed. and Military Science if they joined the band. Soon the percussion section had several new members who claimed to be bass drummers and cymbal players. But the band had only one bass drum and one pair of cymbals. Nevertheless, these “new” band members were issued band jackets, and hats. As long as they owned white ducks, to fill out the uniform, they were given old broken-down trumpets or horns, and could “play” and march with the band. I have a treasured photograph taken from atop the old Taylor Stadium Pressbox during the Lehigh-Lafayette game as the band performed at half-time. We formed the block letter L, which never would have been possible without our cadre of non-playing marchers. The following year, as hundreds of veterans entered Lehigh under the G. I. Bill, enrollment grew to over 1,800 students, William Schempf replaced Professor Shields as band director, and the band swelled its ranks without the help of pseudo-players. Kenneth D. LINDERMAN ARTICLE ‘ADDS JOY TO MY LIFE’ Thank you for an elegant feature article in the Fall ’07 issue on “The Linderman.” This wonderful structure and storehouse of knowledge was at the center of my Lehigh education. To have its character and ambiance preserved—and to read of it—adds joy to my life. From September 1937 to June 1941, I suppose there were few days I did not enter the Linderman’s great Gothic doors. The reading room provided my information on the contemporary world of events, politics, and intellectual affairs. A carrel gave me intimate contact with books, stimulated self-study and time to set forth ideas in the written word. A room used by Professor Gipson as his research office and seminar room introduced me to world-class scholarship. On these rich experiences, I was given the opportunity to have a long and satisfying life. Perhaps my thoughts in this letter will demonstrate how this unique and beautiful architectural gem was the soul of my education, as in the words of President Gast it is “the soul of the campus.” May it serve well Lehigh students of tomorrow as it served those like me for 129 years. Richard A. Ware ’41 NON-PLAYERS MADE A “L” OF A DIFFERENCE I thoroughly enjoyed the article about the Lehigh Marching Band in the Fall 2007 Lehigh Alumni Bulletin. I joined the Lehigh Band in the fall of 1945 as a freshman just out of high school. World War II had ended in August of that year and our freshman class of 200 constituted more than one-third of the total student enrollment. During registration week, Band Director Shields did his best to bolster the band membership but at the first meeting of the full band I remember there were fewer than 30 students. THANK A MARINE Re: “Deconstructing Masculinity” Page 12, Fall ’07 I am not at all certain of what John Pettegrew means when he states that U.S. Marines kill with “apparent ease and ferocity…” That description does not square with the Marines I have known. I wonder if it has occurred to Pettegrew to thank a U.S. Marine for the work he/she does? David T. Berquist M.Ed. ’68 spring 2008 3 http://www.lehigh.edu/alumni
