EDITOR’S NOTE: ALUMNI BULLETIN GOES GREENER—AND GOLD As we were about to go to press with this issue, we learned that the Lehigh Alumni Bulletin won gold for best university magazine in the 2009 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II Accolades Awards. Our online version of the Alumni Bulletin also was recognized by CASE District II, winning silver in the university magazine Web site category. District II is the largest of CASE’s eight districts, encompassing Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and West Virginia. While we certainly appreciate the recognition from our peers, we continue to seek ways to make your alumni magazine even better. With this issue you hold in your hands, we’re taking another step to reduce the Alumni Bulletin’s carbon footprint by printing on paper made with 30 percent recycled material. Additionally, our printer, Lane Press, has achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) “Chain of Custody Certification,” which means the paper we use is harvested and processed to meet the FSC’s rigorous social, economic, and environmental standards. For the three issues we publish this year, our new paper will prevent the loss of 477 trees; 331 million British thermal units, or the annual energy used by about four homes; 53,121 pounds of CO2, or the amount emitted by about 5 cars a year; 174,142 gallons of wastewater; and 28,813 pounds of solid waste. Jack Croft, Editor ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ESTIMATES WERE MADE USING THE ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND PAPER CALCULATOR. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT WWW.PAPERCALCULATOR.ORG. MY FIRST TIME ONE—The crowd yelled out! This was the first wrestling match of the season. TWO—The crowd counted. The place was packed and the air charged. THREE—The audience roared. We are in a place called the snake pit. I understood why someone might name it such. FOUR—I was sitting fairly high up and watching three bodies move within a circle way below. FIVE—The crowed screamed in unison. SIX— “What the heck is going on?” I said. I was really confused with all this counting. None of the previous matches that evening had this counting. Someone turned to me and said: “If Pendleton doesn’t pin him in 30 seconds, it’s considered a loss.” TWENY-ONE—The crowd was now in a frenzy. Pendleton gets his opponent in a cradle. The referee lies down on the mat looking for two shoulders touching the mat and then slaps the mat. The crowd stops counting at TWENTY SEVEN and goes wild. So do I. Who thought wrestling could be so exciting? Such was my introduction into Lehigh wrestling my freshman year in 1962. Kirk Pendleton went on to become a national champion, but his teammates were also great wrestlers. With all due respect to Bobby Weaver and Mike Caruso, whose recognition and praise is so very well deserved (“Heart of a Champion,” Fall 2008), I also want to thank and recognize all the other phenomenal wrestlers who over the past 100 years thrilled us with their skill, conditioning, and heart. Although they did not appear on the timeline, they are well remembered and appreciated for the great excitement and entertainment they provided us. They were all champions in my book.—Mickey Garlick ’66 winter 2009 3 http://www.lehigh.edu/alumni http://WWW.PAPERCALCULATOR.ORG http://www.fsc.org
