Alumni Bulletin - Winter 2009 - (Page 32) FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK LEHIGH GETS IN YOUR HEART I had an opportunity recently to visit Col. Frank Stutz, Lehigh Class of 1931, who is as sharp as a honed bayonet, and one of the oldest living Lehigh alumni. Col. Stutz was celebrating his 100th birthday, and it was my privilege to represent Lehigh University on this special occasion. PHOTO BY BILL DENISON LUAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINEES In accordance with the bylaws of the Lehigh University Alumni Association, these individuals are recommended for nomination as officers, directors, and alumni trustees, to be voted on at the annual meeting on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Gary Liddick ’76 John Millane ’58 Alefiyah Shambhoora ’05 Thomas Spencer ’69 Ronald Workman ’65 More than 75 years after his graduation, Col. Stutz still counts Lehigh among his most cherished associations, and dearly loves his alma mater. It gets in your heart, this place. Col. Stutz is a living tribute to the impact a Lehigh education can have on a young person. We wish him well as he heads into his second century, and we are honored to count him among our alumni. Back here on campus, we have begun receiving applications from the next generation of Lehigh hopefuls. For many, joining the Lehigh family and wearing the brown and white is a long-held ambition, and around the country (and the world!) high school seniors anxiously await an envelope bearing the familiar Lehigh crest. Remember that feeling of anticipation? Many things have changed at Lehigh in the 78 years since Col. Stutz graduated, but Col. Frank Stutz ’31, center, holds a certificate from Lehigh Presione thing remains essentially un- dent Alice P. Gast honoring his 100th birthday. Robert Wolfenden, right, and Alicia Karam Harkness ’91, Young Alumni Trustee, left, changed: Young applicants still presented Stutz with the certificate. race home from school to check the mailbox for the letter from the Admissions Office welcoming them to the Lehigh family. That’s why scholarships and financial assistance programs are so important: to make it possible for outstanding students to attend Lehigh, regardless of economic status. In fact, you may not be aware that all unrestricted Lehigh Fund contributions go to support scholarships and financial assistance programs. That shows our commitment to ensuring that the best and brightest students can join the Lehigh family. As a member of that family yourself, I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s well worth the effort. I wish you and your family much happiness in the new year, on behalf of your other family, back here on old South Mountain. Best regards, Robert W.
