Life Outside Fall 2017 - 17

Rag, but we like the circuit route that takes you up
the Ridge Trail and across the rock scramble to the
summit. Return by taking the Saddle Trail to the
Weakley Hollow fire road back to the parking lot.
Get There: From Sperryville, take U.S. 522 south
for .8 miles and turn right onto state Route 231.
Proceed for 8 miles, then take a right onto state
Route 601, following the signs to the parking area
(about 3 miles).
From Madison, follow 231 for 12.8 miles, then
turn left onto state Route 602. Follow the signs to
the parking area (about 3 miles).
White Oak Canyon Falls, Shenandoah
National Park
What to Expect: While the canyon sports six
cascading falls total, the upper falls is the
biggest, and drops 86 feet. The hike to the upper
falls is a 4.6-mile roundtrip, with plenty of scenery
to go around. Although some sections are steep,
difficulty here is moderate.
The Hike: From the parking lot, follow the White
Oak Canyon Trail to the upper falls (about 2.3
miles). To upgrade your adventure, continue past
the upper falls for another 1.35 miles and check out
the 35-foot lower falls.
Get There: Head to milepost 42.6 of the Shenandoah
National Park on Skyline Drive and park at the lot
for the White Oak Skyline Drive Trailhead.

"...toward the top, you can
choose to either scramble
up the rocks directly,
or follow the steep trail
around to the summit"

Flat Top Mountain, Bedford County
What to Expect: Part of the picturesque
and extremely popular Peaks of Otter
Recreation Area, Flat Top offers great
views of the piedmont toward Lynchburg and into
the Shenandoah Valley, and more solitude than its
compatriot, Sharp Top. Designated with Fallingwater
Cascades Trail as a continuous National Recreation
Trail in April 1982, the peak rises to an elevation
of 4,004 feet and also features views of Sharp Top
and Harkening Hill. Scattered outcroppings of rock
offer ample area to play or relax for lunch.
The Hike: From the parking lot, follow the Flat
Top Trail for 2.6 miles to the broad summit.
Get There: From U.S. 460, take the exit into
Bedford, and turn onto state Route 43 north.
