21 event also includes half marathon and
10k distance choices, all of which end with
a festival-like finish in downtown Roanoke.

The Conquer the Cove 25k and Marathon,
June 3, take place on the ever-growing trails
of the Carvins Cove Natural Reserve. The
marathon offers "only" about half of the gain
of the Blue Ridge Marathon, and finishes
with an easy two miles into Loch Haven
Lake, headquarters for the event.

And speaking of "conquering the cove,"
have you updated your Carvins Cove Trails
Done List lately? The bounty of trails and
the resulting loops, circuits and other
combinations continues to grow.

COMING IN 2019: An extension of the Brushy Mountain Fire Road trail, from its
current end in the Carvins Cove Nature Preserve, across new land donated by the
Hinchee family, all the way to the Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail in Salem.
The donation is not complete as we go to press, but two Hinchee family trusts
will carry out the process over the course of the coming months. Matching grants
from the Virginia Land Conservation foundation and the Preservation Trust Fund
will be augmented by funds from Roanoke County.
Kemper Fant, president of Pathfinders for Greenways, characterized the coming
(and future potential of the) trail this way: "Eventually, you will be able to travel
by trail out of Carvins Cove, down Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail, maybe stop at
Parkway Brewing Company, then continue
on to the Roanoke River Greenway and
the network of trails it currently does and
eventually will provide."
Greenway Coordinator Liz Belcher put
it more succinctly in an email, and from
the other direction: "Greenway to the
Cove-what could be better?"
