More AT Parking
in Clarke County
THE PARKING LOT AT THE Appalachian
Trail access point north of Va. 7 and
east of Pine Grove has undergone a
long-awaited expansion.
The former 10-car-capacity lot, just
off of Va. 679, has been expanded to
accommodate about 30 vehicles. The
5.5-mile Raven Rocks section of the trail
is popular with day hikers, and parking
problems had led to both missed hikes
and dangerous over-parking along both
Va. 7 and 679.
The project was a joint effort among
the Clarke County Board of Supervisors, VDOT and the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, which oversees that
section of the trail.
Clarke County was recognized in 2012
by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy as
an Appalachian Trail Community.

Disc Golf Goes Big-Time at Explore Park
THE MAYFLOWER HILLS DISC Golf
Course at Explore Park, just off the Blue
Ridge Parkway at milepost 115, opened
in May with 18 holes on a sprawling and
diverse layout featuring fields, hills and
wooded areas.
The course, designed by members of
the Roanoke Disc Golf Club, offers 105

possible course alignments, and has
beginner, intermediate and expert tee
boxes on most holes.
Three-dollar donations are
appreciated. Or, play free all year
after purchase of an adventure pass.
