BE THE
RESPONSIBLE HOST
KEEPING THE HOLIDAYS SAFE:

Here are tips and recipes to help assure your guests travel home safe and sound.

Y

ou've planned the perfect party to celebrate the
season. What could go wrong? Nothing can spoil
the perfection like irresponsible drinking, from
trivial goofs such as foolish friends to catastrophic problems, like guests who don't make it home at all.
A few easy planning tips can help ensure that the party is
memorable for all the right reasons.

BE THE HOST WITH THE LEAST
By limiting your own consumption of alcohol, you'll be better able to gauge your guests' consumption.
It's illegal to drive in Michigan with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08% or above. Although some people can appear to be unaffected, alcohol inevitably changes reflex time
and depth perception, and hence affects the ability to drive
safely. Of course, everyone's body processes alcohol differently, influenced in part by gender and muscle mass, but an
average rule of thumb is one serving of alcohol per hour, with
at least an hour after to recover. A serving of alcohol is typically 12 ounces of a typical beer, five ounces of wine or 1.5
ounces of 80-proof liquor.
When you're in control of your own faculties, you can not
only keep your guests from becoming too inebriated, you can
tactfully change the subject when Uncle Hank starts arguing
politics or making inappropriate jokes.

PROVIDE PLENTY OF THE RIGHT FOODS
Minds that are focused on eating and stomachs full of food
have fewer thoughts of over-imbibing. Put high-protein
and high-carb foods like cheeses, meats and breads on your
menu, and skip the salty foods that stimulate thirst.

DON'T ALLOW UNDERAGE DRINKING
Not only is it illegal to allow someone under the age of 21 to
drink alcohol, underage drinking can cause long-term harm
to children and teens.

ENSURE SAFE TRANSPORTATION, THE KEY
TO A SAFE PARTY
Consider a key drop, which is later spirited away to a hidden place. Encourage guests to get a ride to the party so
they won't hesitate to get a safe lift home. Enlist designated
drivers. And have a list of taxi services handy.

PROVIDE LOW-ALCOHOL DRINK OPTIONS
A pleasing alternative for many guests, light cocktails-
also called session cocktails, suppressors, shims, and
low-proofs-serve double duty: fewer calories help compensate for rich party foods while lower alcohol aids in
maintaining resolve, leading to more responsible eating
and drinking. These libations deliver both high taste and
low-test ABV.
To make lighter cocktails:
* Use flavored spirits rather than neutral spirits.
* Focus on lower-alcohol booze. Liqueur, schnapps and
wine spritzers pack less punch, often with enhanced flavor
results, than higher-alcohol options such as tequila, vodka,
and rum.
* Beer can enhance a mixer without adding much alcohol: try tropical juices splashed with a couple ounces of
wheat beer an IPA or Bloody Mary mix with a lager or an amber ale. Create a custom radler or shandy, those German and
British half-and-half blends of lemonade or ginger ale and
