Anna George, originally from Texas, brook trout, “the only trout native to the

a broader level, though, this is about
maintaining the rich aquatic biodiversity
we have in the Southeast. We have more
freshwater fish in Tennessee and Alabama
than any other states in the U.S.
“For me, one good reason to protect
these species is that they all share with us
information about the world.”
Student activists
Programs at schools such as Radford University and
elsewhere are connecting students with the heritage and
challenges of the Appalachian region. They work with
children, with activists, teaching, researching and learning
with the goal of making the region better. These students
are just a few of the young people who are discovering or
rediscovering their love for the Appalachian mountains.
