Chimney Rock Park, N.C.
Our readers named Chimney Rock Park a fall favorite
in our July/August issue. This fall’s events include
Sept. 7’s second annual Movie on the Meadows (this
year it’s the WNC-filmed “The Hunger Games”),
and the closing of this year’s Music on the Mountain
on Sept. 14 with bluegrass and Americana. If you’re
a birder, Flock to the Rock on Sept. 22-23 for the
park’s migration event, including walks and workshops. Hikes and an Oct. 26-27 photography workshop celebrate the season in October.

Mitchell, Avery and Yancey counties in North
Carolina are home to a growing community of artists and crafters. Spruce Pine hosts its annual Potters
Market Invitational October 12 and 13, with 30
ceramic artists. “We have the beautiful mountains,
but the river connects us,” says Denise Cook, director of the Toe River Arts Council for 25 years.
Penland School of Crafts is here, and music and
theatre are strong as well.
