THE LITTLE TOWN OF LOVE, VA., USED TO HAVE ITS OWN
POST OFFICE. THESE DAYS IT HAS 13 CABINS AND CHALETS
AT ROYAL OAKS, WHERE VALENTINE'S DAY IS STILL SUPREME.
Donna Tamplet fell so much in love with a place
called Love that she knew that was exactly where she
had to marry her husband, Robert - at the Royal
Oaks Retreat.
Here, the long-gone "Love, Virginia" post office
name remains. Oh, listen - Tamplet made doubly
sure of its survival on each envelope of her wedding
invitations. Still, friends questioned this woman
from Williamsburg, Va., before her big day on Aug.
12, 2006.
"They called me and said, 'Do you realize that
you put 'Love, Virginia' on here? And I said, 'Yes,
that's a real place.'"
This hamlet was once known as Meadow
Mountain. Then, in 1894, a post office opened in
a small corner of Hugh Coffey's country store, and
the postal service wanted something shorter than
"Meadow Mountain" because that name required
too many letters to fit into each letter's small, circular postal stamp.
Coffey turned to a tribute: He thought of his
daughter, Lovey, who had died of typhoid fever and shortened the name to "Love."
Along came the lovebirds, each Valentine's Day,
