HORSEBACK RIDING: IN THE WOODS OR RIVER
Sonya Alexander saddled up her career as an equine
guide when she was only 14, making her family's
horseback-riding business her own in 1974 with "a little
OCD," she says, grinning.
Today, Alexander still operates the Trackrock Stables near
Blairsville. And she caters to riders of all skill levels, offering rides
that trot across green fields on 250 acres bordering the
Chattahoochee National Forest. "The mountains are just
breathtaking all seasons - the mornings, the fogs, the snow,
the ice crystals," Alexander says.
And a horse, of course, just makes it better. "You're up
higher than when you're walking," Alexander adds. "And you
get to look around and let the horse take care of you."
Over in Dillard, a lady with similar equine experience often
likes to get wet with her guided trail rides.
"We splash right down the middle of the Little Tennessee
River," says Pam Thompson, the owner and operator of the
Dillard House Stables. "And on the ride, in the fall, you can
actually see Indian mounds that predate the Cherokees."-JT

in Time on Hwy. 129" inside a new museum at
Blairsville, finding classic cars on display.
"We're not a touch-me-not museum," says Back
in Time's curator, Greg Bennett. "We help people
in and out of the cars so they can have their pictures
made."
We also do what we did with the Dillards - and
that is, simply, to feast. I ripped into the fingerlickin'-good ribs at Jim's Smokin' Que in Blairsville;
devoured a plump-and-juicy oyster po' boy sandwich inside the Rusty Bike Café in Clayton; packed
away a hero sandwich at the Cupboard Café in
Dillard; and grinded gears to find apple bread that
goes great with coffee at Blairsville's Logan Turnpike
Mill. I also polished off a scrumptious seafood platter prepared by the lively Mike Gurley, owner of
Mike's Seafood Market & Grill in Blairsville, near
the banks of Lake Nottely.
The seafood lover in me could not resist the
jumbo crab cake appetizer and shrimp piccata,
replete with angel-hair pasta, at Michaelee's
Chocolate Caffe on Hiawassee's North Main Street.
