times, the kayakers will gather in the calm pool, and
they'll shoot the Bull Sluice. So it's a lot of fun to
watch."
Bull Sluice roars like a waterfall. And, yes, there
is a cache of cascades in these mountains - from the
Trahlyta Falls, which includes an observation platform at Vogel State Park, to the perfectly romantic
Cupid Falls, gracing the greens of a picnic-worthy
park near the campus of Young Harris College.
Chasing waterfalls could equate to some simple
sightseeing, like witnessing the wisps of water tumbling into the gorge at the Tallulah Point Overlook.
This rustic gift shop - boasting "The Only Roadside
View of Tallulah Gorge" - sells snacks and locallymade cider. You can also meet an old soul named
Nathan Bundrick: "I was born in '92," he says, "so
I've been here my whole life." Now in his 20s,
Bundrick helps his mother operate this family business and says, "It's a cool tradition to keep going."
Tallulah Gorge State Park offers history on how
the area's wild rivers have lured moviemakers, producing 1972's "Deliverance" and 1955's "The Great
Locomotive Chase." Northwest of the park, follow
the Tallulah River upstream to find Rabun County's
Lake Burton, boasting luxurious homes overlooking
sparkling waters.
