HOW TO PLANT DAFFODILS
Choose bulbs that have not dried out; plant in
fall, 2-4 weeks before the ground freezes.
ing them. There's a row I planted
down the ridge a good distance from
the house, but in a spot that I can see
from my kitchen window when I'm
washing dishes. Every January their
green leaves poke prematurely
through the ground. By early February,
buds on their flower stalks are beginning to bulge. There may be years
when the flowers don't get snowed
on, though I can't remember one.
Even if they don't get snowed on, they
get pummeled by hard, cold late-winter rains.
These daffodils have the same
stamina that those old timey ones do,
the ones you discover in the woods,
out in the middle of nowhere, on a
spring day when the grass has
greened up but the trees aren't yet in
leaf, and you're out on an explore. Up
ahead, you see a splash of yellow amid
the green. You make your way to it,
and there it is: a row of daffodils,
mostly foliage but a surprising number
of blooms, considering the fact that
the house they mark the site of is completely gone.
Oh, there may be a chimney
standing, or a bit of one, a boxwood or
two, maybe a bit of rusting tin from a
stove-in roof. Maybe, though, there's
nothing but this little line of daffodils,
the old-fashioned double kind. They
were planted by some housewife
whose lichen-covered grave is up in
the church cemetery on the hill.
They're a legacy she left us without
meaning to, a gift we're grateful to
receive.
* A month before planting, loosen soil in a
spot that gets at least three hours of sun.
(Since daffodils bloom before trees leaf out,
you can plant them under deciduous trees.)
* Add compost to the loosened soil and work
it in. Daffodils like well-drained soil with plenty
of organic matter.
* Plant using the "rule of threes": at a depth
three times the height of the bulb, spaced
three times the width of the bulb. Plant with
the pointed end up.
* To naturalize daffodils in grass, don't plant
in rows. Instead, cast them in the desired area;
where they land, remove a core of turf with a
bulb planter, sprinkle in a little slow-release
bulb fertilizer or bone meal, insert the bulb and
cover it up.
* For container planting, place them more
closely together (one bulb-width apart) for a
fuller display.
