BRIAN ALLEY ZOOMS across the greens of the
Primland Resort on a Sunday afternoon, spying what
appears to be a majestic Matterhorn rising from the
gut of a gorge. This is the Pinnacles of Dan, he points
out and notes how the early route of the Appalachian
Trail once climbed up and over that rocky ridge.
Today, the Pinnacles of Dan has become a focal
point for golfers wanting to witness great scenery at
Primland, a resort that spans 12,000 acres in Patrick
County, Va., just a few miles east of the Blue Ridge
Parkway.
"That view," Alley says. "You can see every nook
and cranny."
Golf is Primland's big lure. But so are the guided
hunting and fishing trips plus the muddy adventure
of driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle - sloshing
through puddles, laughing all the way.
"In the springtime, we have turkey hunters come
in," says hunting guide Michael Leftwich. "We pick
them up at five o'clock in the morning, and we hunt
'til 12. Then they go play golf after that. They have a
half a day to do whatever. And it really works out."
Primland's sprawling size - those 12,000 acres are
roughly the equivalent to Bermuda - means it makes
sense to have two entrances. One lies just off U.S. 58,
near Meadows of Dan, Va., while the other leans closer
to Mount Airy, N.C., near Claudville, Va.
