AARON LAFALCE
"My granny and pa paw lived in Battery Park
Apartments," says April Nance. "I loved staying with
them and going places downtown. It's been interesting
to see this town change. I love how it is now with all
the art, music and food, but I also don't deny it was
great back then too. There are always plusses and
minuses."
The 43-year-old Nance is always downtown during
the Southern Highland Craft Guild Fair at the U.S.
Cellular Center in July and October. She's been serving
as PR Manager for the Folk Art Center, located on the
Blue Ridge Parkway, since November 2007 and loves
being tied into Asheville's abundance of artists and
craftspeople.
Founded in 1930, the Southern Highland Craft Guild
represents approximately 1,000 craftspeople located
in 293 counties of nine southeastern states.
"In the late '90s there weren't as many galleries or
open studios in Asheville as there are today," says
Nance. "With the rise of the River Arts District the craft
scene changed."
"I love the positive energy of downtown," she says.
"It was kind of nice to be a secret, but I don't think
we're a secret anymore."
"I'm very much a city boy. It's kind of strange, but I've lived
at some point in every part of Asheville," says lifelong
resident Aaron LaFalce. This 30-year old singer/songwriter
just released a new album, "Kairology," in November
2013. He's also a popular midday host on 98.1 The River.
He says Asheville has definitely shaped his music. "If
you go downtown and listen to all the buskers, you'll hear
a little of all of that on my album. I'm a reflection of that
melting pot community and have songs that are very
Appalachian, almost bluegrass, as well as songs that are
very much rock. There was a heavy rock band influence
in Asheville in the 1970s and '80s."
"I'm very fortunate," he says, "I'm able to make a comfortable living making music." He plays around town
frequently including a regular Thursday night gig at 131
Main Restaurant in Biltmore Park.
Asheville's exploding music scene continues to impress
LaFalce. "When I was younger I'd ask 'Why don't we get
any of the good bands?'' 'That's changed. So many great
artists have come here like The Killers and Smashing
Pumpkins. I can go see a great rock show at The Orange
Peel and in the same week catch Beethoven at Thomas
Wolfe Auditorium with the Asheville Symphony and
that's a lot of fun for me." -MHM
