The Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar provides a perfect place to gather (pets welcome), offering some 30,000 books for sale.

Statuesque until someone drops money in their buckets, they come to life with beats on the drum or a few
strums of the guitar strings for a few seconds before
retreating into their frozen poses.
For paid concerts, the Orange Peel reigns king
of the music scene. It's featured such performers as
the Smashing Pumpkins, Jack White, Cyndi Lauper
and Imagine Dragons. A full calendar of upcoming
shows can be found at theorangepeel.net. Other
music venues worth checking out include the wellestablished Grey Eagle in the River Arts District,
and two newer venues - Altamont Theater in downtown and Isis Music Hall in West Asheville - providing a stage for up-and-coming musicians as well as
more notable names.
THEN THERE'S the expanding foodie scene. Asheville

has become highly regarded for its exceptional chefs
and restaurants. The quality rivals much bigger cities
and gives Asheville a definite edge as one of the leading
places to visit and live in the Southeast. Downtown is
a foodie mecca, but West Asheville draws its share of
attention with eateries such as The Admiral, Sunny
Point Cafe and the newly opened Buffalo Nickel, the
last of which - department of full disclosure - is the
creation of my friends Lynn and Rob Foster.

I'll clue you in on a secret if you want to witness an
example of community spirit in Asheville - if you're
in town on a Wednesday at lunchtime, consider dining
at the Haywood Street Church Welcome Table. I love
the camaraderie as a wide mix of Asheville residents
and visitors show up for a hot meal often prepared by
chefs from some of the area's top restaurants like
Curate, Strada, Table and Chai Pani.
The last time I was there, the owner of Grovewood
Café was seated to my right; a homeless woman to my
left, along with vacationers from Savannah, Ga., as
well as some men also seated randomly at our table
who had spent the night sleeping on the street. It may
challenge the comfort zones of some, but I think this
event truly personifies the potential Asheville has to
be welcoming to all. That doesn't always happen.
Everyday life can be cruel, but on Wednesdays at
Haywood Street, business people in suits and dresses
are sitting next to people in donated clothing who
don't know where their next meal is coming from and
positive bonds are created.
Who knows what bonds would be formed if Wolfe
were alive today. I predict he'd be seen at one of the
local breweries, sharing stories and pints of Green Man
Porter with a nun taking a break from pedaling
through Asheville's streets. 
