PLAYING WITH HEAVY EQUIPMENT
Ever dreamed of driving a military tank? What once was
reserved only for enlisted military personnel can now be enjoyed
on a weekend outing to Blue Ridge, Ga. at Tank Town U.S.A.
Fewer than a handful of locations across the country allow
private citizens to experience the thrill. At the five-acre site in
northern Georgia, it is a family activity, with children as young
as 7 years old allowed to ride in an authentic FV432. Todd
Liebross, who opened the adrenaline-pumping attraction a
year ago, was surprised to find that 80 percent of his guests
are families, and half are women.
"We have a lot of grandparents that have been in the military and they just want to bring their grandkids out, even if they
didn't drive a tank," says Liebross. Crushing a car with a tank,
and maneuvering an excavator, are also among the unique
thrills. After a rugged day of play, indulge in a luxurious stay at
the Aska Lodge Bed and Breakfast located five miles away.

Allisonia or Foster Falls and paddle the New River,
which is one of the oldest on the planet (kayak and
canoe rentals available at Foster Falls). And don't forget your fishing gear, as the New River is great for
landing everything from bass and crappie to catfish.
STAY:
The New River Trail State Park has four primitive
campgrounds, including Cliffview, near Galax, which
overlooks Chestnut Creek. If you don't want to rough
it, there are many rental cabins near the trail, including Riversong Cabins in Fries, with gas-log fireplaces,
satellite TVs and fully equipped kitchens. There's also
Southwest Virginia Cabins near Pulaski, which has
multiple-room cabins with front porches and rear
