In the winter, some animals go inside, some stay
out. At Pruett's Animal Kingdom, the lemurs and lions
retreat with all their toys to winter quarters when the
temperature dips to 45 degrees. Most of Fort Chiswell's
big animals remain outside or in three-sided shelters,
as do Lost World's camels and llamas. Sue Carr panicked after her ostriches' first snowstorm. "I went outside and couldn't see all my ostriches. They had to be
dead under the snow. I was crying, digging in a mound
for a body, and up popped a little head. They were fine.
They'd gone under the snow for warmth."
Fort Chiswell's parrots, African cranes, and
Capuchin monkeys go indoors, into the same building
where the owner lives. "No, the monkeys don't wear
clothes in the house, or anywhere else," says Crosky.
"They aren't pets. They bite. The female throws poop.
We know they're animals, wild animals. We still love
them."
