Mediterranean by nature, Jerry and Marsha Sexton's
house provides the perfect box seat from which to
watch the activity on Cherokee Lake.

From the front, Jerry and Marsha Sexton's house looks
like it leapt fully formed from the Mediterranean.
From the back, it looks out upon Cherokee Lake from
a large screened enclosure that keeps bugs out and
keeps the fun happening late into the night.

The enclosure "brings the outdoors to you,"
Jerry says. "You have the water and the mountain
view and the woods all around you - your own little
piece of heaven that accommodates all of your creature comforts."
The Sextons host family gatherings regularly
that attract as many as 30 brothers, sisters, children,
grandchildren, nieces, nephews and more. If Jerry
is lucky, Marsha will fry up some of the fish he and
the grandchildren catch in the lake. The 28,780acre reservoir with nearly 400 miles of shoreline is
full of small- and large-mouth bass, crappie and
bluegill. TVA created the east Tennessee lake by
damming the Holston River as part of its emergency
energy-production project during World War II.
The lake covers an ancient Indian warpath that
Daniel Boone followed to explore the area.
The Sextons live elsewhere, in a house on a backwater section of the lake known as the Duck Pond.
Jerry, who owns a furniture manufacturing company and pastors part-time, accesses the main channel of the lake by piloting his boat through a
concrete tunnel. During times of low water, he and
Marsha, manager of their rental property, might be
