in the southeastern corner of Grayson County,
Virginia.
The remote gravel road fronting the cabins makes
a great walking trail.
"If you walk up this road and go maybe a half mile,
you'll be in North Carolina," Blaszyk says. "And then
you'll flip back over to Virginia. And then you'll flip
back over to North Carolina."
Blaszyk grins.
"The coolest thing about this road," she says, "is
it used to be an old mule road that went down to
North Carolina. GPS still picks up a mule road that
you'd be lucky to get up if you had a mule. But, that's
the way they used to travel it in the 1800s. And it's
still listed as a main thoroughfare."
Come winter, some guests don't mind getting
snowed in, the owner says. "We have to pick them up
sometimes. We've had to pick up a few people from
the bottom of the hill."
TEMPE BLASZYK and her husband, Andy, met at age
15. They have been married for nearly 30 years and
planted their roots at Fiddler's Roost about a decade
ago.
A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Tempe
Blaszyk grew up in Mobile, Alabama.
"It's very personal. You put yourself into it more
than you think. It's a very personal business," she says.
"The most important thing for people to know
- that I've learned over the years with this business
- is that the owners are on site."
They fix breakfast for you, too.
"We were going to do a bed-and-breakfast,"
Tempe Blaszyk says. "What makes this unique is
that we're a completely different spin on a
bed-and-breakfast."
Expect a delivery to your door: sausage, juice,
fruit and pumpkin-bread pancakes. Other days
might mean "Bananas Foster French Toast."
Guests are pleasantly surprised. "They love
that," Blaszyk says. "It's different. And different is
good."
The name Fiddler's Roost fits, especially being
so close to the Blue Ridge Music Center.
On certain nights, when the wind is right, you
can hear concerts from your cabin. "We've had
Ricky Skaggs up here. We've had Roseanne Cash -
that was a big one."
Still, it's the Skaggs show that Blaszyk recalls
with a grin.
"Ricky Skaggs? Coyotes hate him. Unusual, but
it's his own unique thing," she says, smiling. "There
were dogs and coyotes going off in every direction,
far off in the distance, while he's singing. And we
talked to one of his management people, and he said
he would have loved that." 
