PETER FRANK EDWARDS

Button expanded her interests to
embrace food - specifically the
food of Spain, her passion ignited
by a seven-month internship in the
kitchen of elBulli, a former restaurant in the small town of Roses, on
the Costa Brava in Catalonia in
northeastern Spain. Katie's husband, Félix Meana, worked at
elBulli as front-of-the house service
manager.
Cúrate is very much a family
enterprise. Katie's parents, Elizabeth

and moved to Asheville, enlisting
local artists and artisans to help renovate that old bus station. In 2014,
the family opened Nightbell, a restaurant and lounge around the corn e r o n A s h e v i l l e 's L e x i n g t o n
Avenue, featuring what is termed
"innovative American cuisine" and
craft cocktails.
The word "cúrate" (pronounced
coo-rah-tay) literally means "cure
yourself" in Spanish, and the
Button-Meana family says, "We
believe in the curative effects of
sharing good food and wine with
family and friends."
When it comes to tapas, "sharing" is the operative word, so that
as many plates can be ordered as
possible. According to the menu,
gambas al ajillo, shrimp sautéed in
garlic, is the "number-one tapa in
Asheville." Several dishes at Cúrate
feature cured ham. The tabla de
jamón features three different
cured hams.
Other Spanish-influenced favorites are mushrooms sautéed in olive
oil and sherry, honey-drizzled fried
eggplant and piquillo peppers stuffed
with Spanish goat cheese. White
asparagus is dressed in a lemon vinaigrette and served with a housemade mayonnaise. Sunburst trout,
from nearby Canton, North Carolina,

tomato fresco, black olives, sweet
onion and lemon vinaigrette.
The Cúrate menu is clearly labeled
for those who prefer gluten-free,
lactose-free, vegan and nut-free
options.
In 2016, look for a Katie Button
cookbook that adapts the flavorful
recipes of the Cúrate kitchen for the
home cook.

Bavaria in Black Mountain

There are several reasons why the
Berliner Kindl restaurant succeeds in
Black Mountain, North Carolina.
One is the large German population
in Western North Carolina. Another,
says co-owner Sharon Trube, is the
fact that German cuisine is largely
meat-and-potatoes fare, connecting
it closely with the food of the
American South. Sauerbraten is not
far from Sunday dinner pot roast.
But perhaps the most obvious reasons for the restaurant's popularity
