Near North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway, the Great Balsam Mountains are yet another place to revel in the beauty of Catawba rhododendron. One can enjoy Balsam-range scenery from the comfort of a car, on a short hike, or during the rigors of a backpacking trip. These rhododendron were photographed at dusk on an easy two-mile walk from Black Balsam Road, the U.S. forest service road that gives access to many trails. Catawba in the Great Balsams tend to peak by mid-June. Want More?
