The International Dark-Sky Association,
with support from local astronomers and
others, has designated its first "dark sky
park" in the Southeast, one of only 29 in the
world. The Blue Ridge Observatory and Star
Park, on six acres near Spruce Pine, North
Carolina, is managed by Mayland Community College and surrounded by the Pisgah
National Forest. Plans include construction
of the Southeast's largest observatory, to
be open to the public. Through public education, the association aims to reduce light
pollution, which harms migratory birds, turtles and other species. darksky.org

Master Gardeners in Haywood County are
leading efforts to educate the public about
the critical state of monarch butterflies,
which scientists believe have declined by
90 percent. Milkweed is the only plant
where females will lay eggs and the only
food monarchs eat, but it, too, is declining
due to development. The gardeners are
planting monarch "waystations" in backyards, schools and libraries, and teaching
others how to create safe havens for the
butterflies to help them on their annual
