ABOVE: Sky gazers sit around the campfire at Mile High Campground near
Cherokee, North Carolina. This is a favorite activity on cool summer nights in
the mountains. The North Carolina mountains offer very good star gazing
opportunities as light pollution, while still present, is lesser at higher
elevations. RIGHT: The Milky Way with Draconids meteor is viewed here from
Waterrock Knob on the North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway. The Draconids
meteor shower occurs every year during the first or second week of October
and radiates from the fiery mouth of the northern constellation Draco the
Dragon.
