Outside, the Lost Sea Adventure
includes a nature trail, glass-blowing
shop and general store. Inside, you can
sign up for a wild cave tour, crawling
on your stomach and your knees.
Cave tours culminate with a ride
in a glass bottom boat on the Lost
Sea - a pool that stretches nearly five
acres but is, actually, believed to extend more than twice that size. The
Lost Sea stakes a claim as "America's
Largest Underground Lake." The attraction is also open every day, except
Christmas.
Extend your visit across Tennessee's Monroe County: Try the Chicago Chicken (with mushrooms and
Swiss cheese) at Bert's Hometown
Grill, a longtime locals' favorite in
nearby Madisonville. Then stay overnight at the handsome cabins of Sequoyah Landing at nearby Vonore,
enjoying the roomy loft, spacious
kitchen and vast view of Lake Tellico
on the backdoor deck.
Rested and ready, our Southern Highlands Attractions journey
wraps up with the sights and sounds
of greater Chattanooga. First, head
south on I-75 for about an hour. Then
turn west on I-24. And, in the spirit of
the "Chattanooga Choo Choo," let's
hitch a ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway (423-821-4224/
ridetheincline.com).
Going up Lookout Mountain,
you may not want to look down - at
least, not while this roller coaster of a
railroad makes its run at an incline of
72.7 percent. It's fun but, to some, intimidating. "If you're thinking about it
on a 90-degree scale," says conductor
Cody Pace, "with 90 degrees straight
up and down, we're not too far from
that."
What's known as "America's Most
Amazing Mile" opened for business
in 1895 as a means for transportation
to isolated Lookout Mountain. Now,
that railway is regarded, largely, as a
thrill ride.
Going inside Lookout Mountain,
you step underground to find the
naturally wonderful Ruby Falls (423821-2544/rubyfalls.com). Yet, along
the way, try to spot the Dragon's Foot
and the giant potato chip - a couple
